When: Tuesday December 19th, 7:00, ESPN
Current spread: FAU -22.5, O/U 63.5
All-time series: Never played
Ok, let’s face it, this is going to be a blowout. Akron had a good run in the MAC and found themselves in a bowl game. Lane Kiffin’s FAU squad should coast through this game. But this is the beauty of bowl season; anything can happen.
Akron is handing over the QB duties to Freshman Kato Nelson. He had limited playing time this season, but put up some good numbers (909 yds, 8 TDs). Jr WR Kwadarrius Smith (34-726-7) will be heavily relied on to help him out. He’s a solid downfield receiver. No one has really stepped up in the running game for the Zips. They have 3 RBs with 300+ yards, but they will almost certainly rely on the passing game if they want to have a chance for a win.
Jason Driskel (1,977 yds, 13 TDs) will be under center for the Owls. He has a talented group of receivers, led by Willie Wright (49-586-4), to help him out. But this offense is centered around RB Devin Singletary. He rushed for 1,796 yards with an astonishing 29 TDs. I don’t see how the Zips will stop him.
Each bowl season we get the occasional mismatch. This is that game. It’ll still be fun to watch the up and coming FAU team as Lane Kiffin attempts to get them, and himself, in the spotlight. As far as the spread goes, toss a coin on a spread this big. But enjoy the game. What else are you going to do on a Tuesday night?
