Showtime Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 3-0 start this season. They’re doing this behind the performance of QB Patrick Mahomes. He is off to a stellar start for the 2018 NFL season. Through 3 games he has passed for 896 yards with 13 touchdowns and has not thrown an interception yet. His mobility and decision making have propelled the Chiefs to the top of the AFC West. They are one of the 3 remaining undefeated teams in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes has plenty of weapons available when he steps under center. WR Tyreek Hill (14-310-3), WR Sammy Watkins (14-176-1), and TE Travis Kelce (16-229-2) have helped him spread the field nicely to keep defenses guessing. RB Kareem Hunt (168 yards, 2 TDs) is coming off an outstanding rookie season and is keeping the running game going. He also has a receiving TD to his credit. This offense, when firing on all cylinders, is going to be hard to stop.

The Chiefs’ defense and special teams are not to be ignored either. Tyreek Hill already has a punt return touchdown this season. And their defense, while not a shutdown style defense, is getting the job done. They have recorded 6 sacks on the season, 12 TFL, and 1 interception. Kicker Harrison Butker has yet to miss a kick this season, hitting all 16 PATs and both FGs he has attempted. Chiefs fans are now hoping I haven’t jinxed him. There are not a lot of holes in this team. They’re playing smart, they’re having fun, and they’re winning.

The road ahead will provide some challenges. This coming week they head into Denver to take on the Broncos on Monday Night Football. This will be a good road test for Kansas City. After that, 3 of the next 4 games are at home. Jacksonville, New England, Cincinnati, and Denver (again) will really show us what this team is made of. Only the Patriots will be on the road, so the Chiefs are in a really good position to put themselves among the elite in the league.

One of the greatest things about football is that anything can happen at any time. It’s why we watch the games, it’s also why we lose some bets. But we keep coming back, and will continue to do so week after week, season after season. No complaints here. Kansas City fans are feeling the excitement right now, as are fans of the Los Angeles Rams and the Miami Dolphins. When your team is undefeated, even if it’s only 3 weeks, it makes football so much more enjoyable. So ride the wave while it’s there and have fun watching. It’s really all we can do.
