After a few dismal 90+ loss seasons, the fans in Cincinnati have been getting restless. They’ve begged for a change, they’ve pined for better times. Yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds made a trade that seems to have made these fans very happy. With the promise of more to come, things are finally looking bright in the Queen City again.
The Reds sent Homer Bailey and prospects Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood, and Kyle Farmer. My first thought when I saw this was that the Dodgers gave up way too much for 2 prospects and an aptly named pitcher named Homer. Of course, as we have all assumed by now, they are making room for Bryce Harper. It makes sense when you factor that in. As far as Bailey goes, the guy has 2 no-hitters. It’s not like he doesn’t know how to pitch. Maybe a fresh start will rejuvenate him.
I love what my Reds got in return. I’ve been a huge Matt Kemp fan for years. Seeing him in a Reds uniform is something I’ve dreamed of. Yasiel Puig will give this team a spark that has been missing for a few years. The fans will love him while fans of other teams love to hate him. Alex Wood gives the Reds a solid lefty on the hill every 5 games. He will also help the younger guys on the staff. All 3 of these players are positive additions to the Reds. Thinking of Kemp and Puig batting in a hitter’s ballpark like GABP will put a smile on any Reds fan’s face.
I have no idea what the lineup will be, but here is what I envision.
- Winker RF
- Peraza SS
- Votto 1B
- Suarez 3B
- Gennett 2B
- Puig CF
- Kemp LF
- Barnhart C
I think Peraza is a better option to lead off, but I feel the lefty righty alternating bats will provide a problem for opposing teams during late innings in close games. I also feel they could trade Gennett for another starter and plug Senzel in at 2B. Again, I’m not privy to anything they do, this is just one fan’s thoughts and opinions. Let’s just hope that Winker has been working on his defense.
None of us knows what else is in store, as Dick Williams has promised. We can guess, we can throw out various scenarios, but only Williams knows what moves are being planned. Yesterday’s moves created quite a stir on social media among the fans. It was a refreshing change to what we’ve seen the last few years. Maybe the next move will push that cloud of negativity a little farther away and we can enter the 2019 season with some hope. For now, most of us are very happy with the direction the Reds are seemingly headed. Stay tuned.
