The widespread legalization of medicinal marijuana has hit the world of sports and the collateral advertising dollars that goes with it. It seems CBS has turned down an ad to be run during the Super Bowl that promotes said legalization. For the record, the current cost for a 30 second ad is $5.2M. That’s a lot of money to turn down in order to maintain your antiquated views. Maybe not a lot for CBS, but it’s still a good chunk of change.
Acreage Holdings submitted the ad, only to be turned down by CBS. According to the reports I’ve seen, they simply told them they were not accepting ads at this time for medicinal marijuana. The ad wasn’t even trying to sell anything. It was merely stressing the benefits of cannabis for those inflicted with various diseases that studies have shown can be helped and/or eliminated by marijuana. That’s all, no selling, no back alley feel to it that may offend the stiff old folks out there. Just an awareness to a health issue. Shame on them……..cue the eye roll emoji.
Meanwhile, we will be inundated with advertisements for alcohol; you can take that to the bank. CBS will be anyway. Go ahead, everyone, drink up while watching the game before driving home. Just stay away from the herb. If CBS wants to play God, as it seems to be their desire, should they ban all ads for anything that could be construed as harmful? Goodbye Budweiser, goodbye Coca Cola, goodbye Nestle. All of these products, and so many more, are more harmful to the human body than marijuana. But let’s placate the old money that keeps us afloat and wag our finger at the ‘heathens’ that partake of the herb.
I get it, I think, from a business aspect. You don’t want to rock the boat, you don’t want to upset the masses, and you surely don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you. Times change, and with it, the ebb and flow of consumer dollars changes as well. CBS might be doing what they feel is right, but they also run the risk of being left in the progressive dust. They won’t fold, obviously, but they may want to consult with their top brass pretty soon.
Acreage Holdings has stated that they will post the ad online in the very near future. I look forward to seeing it. I want to see what kind of ‘evil’ that CBS is saving us from. If you’re curious, seek it out. Then post it on social media if you want, get their message out. No matter your stance on marijuana and its use, studies have shown that it heals. Healing is a good thing, need I remind you.
Let’s face it, most of us will be wishing we had a blunt when Maroon 5 takes the stage anyway.
