Some people love him, some people hate him. Whichever side you’re on, you have to respect the fact that he has propelled himself to the top and, quite often, right into your life. Barstool Sports isn’t for everyone, but what started out as a dream in Portnoy’s head has now become an online force. It has become a way of life for some. Personally, I love what he does. He holds nothing back, he’s in your face, he’s as real as it gets.
The Podcasts that Barstool produces are among the most listened to in the country. The personalities are electric, hilarious, brazen, and they seem like the type of guys you would want to hang out with at the bar while watching a game. This is all because of Dave Portnoy. He knows what he wants, what America wants, and he delivers. Even his cockiness is addicting. Whether his Patriots and Red Sox are winning titles or when he’s placing a 6 figure bet on a game, he speaks to it as though he knew the outcome all along. Thanks to the recent success in Boston sports, he’s looked like a modern day Nostradamus. Bet accordingly.
His ongoing battle with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is a side story to the NFL season that one can’t help but follow along. Portnoy has been banned from all NFL activities, not that it keeps him from attending. Most of us saw him getting dragged out of the Super Bowl by Security due to a directive by good ole Rog himself. Goodell, clueless as ever, has no idea that he’s doing nothing more than boosting the Barstool brand. He’s almost quite literally putting more money into Portnoy’s pockets. Stoolies across the country just sit back, watch the shenanigans, and laugh. Even when he’s kicked out, cuffed, and dragged around, Dave Portnoy still comes out a winner.
The ban that Roger Goodell has placed on Portnoy is bad for the NFL. This past Sunday, he was a paying customer, was minding his own business, and was behaving just like the thousands of other fans in attendance. I understand all the reasons Goodell doesn’t like the guy, but he makes himself look like a fool with his actions. If Goodell got input from the rest of the NFL fans, he would get very similar opinions. The only difference is that everyone else doesn’t have the media power that Portnoy has. If you can’t beat ’em, ban ’em. Not a good look, Roger.
I hope Dave Portnoy keeps doing what he’s doing for years to come. He’s outrageous, sometimes obnoxious, always passionate. He’s the common man putting out content for the rest of us common men. He’s me, he’s you, he’s us. Patriots fans have a saying…. “They hate us cuz they ain’t us”. Well, the same can be said for Dave himself. They hate him cuz they ain’t him. So love him or hate him, at least respect him.
